I’d definitely be the kind of parent who enabled my child’s dreams. I’d just watch and nurture and guide them. I have the blueprints of what not to do… I think I’d be a good parent, actually.
I think there are a number of things that you can do to encourage your kids’ dreams, but I do believe in speaking by experience of having a lot of help along the way, stumbling in the past. We’ve all stumbled, and we certainly all deserve to get up and walk again.

Mr. Miyazaki’s specialty is taking a primal wish of kids, transporting them to a fantasyland, and then marooning them there. The ‘Star Trek’ future, to me, is where we are headed. Everything is automated, and we are free to pursue our dreams. I was very inspired by Les Blank’s film ‘Burden of Dreams.’ I think what’s unique about his film and the two I’ve made is that they’re close examinations of filmmakers and how their own emotional experiences reflect in the material they’re rendering, and vice versa – how that material sometimes colors their own lives.
I worked at the golf course, and I always had dreams and aspirations of being a professional golfer.

It is the police of America who are on the front lines, who are on the streets, who are in the daily contact with American citizens, who translate the dreams of American citizens when they succeed and frustrate the dreams when they fail.

When I started writing, I was a great rationalist and believed I was absolutely in control. But the older one gets, the more confused, and for an artist I think that is quite a good thing: you allow in more of your instinctual self your dreams, fantasies and memories. It’s richer, in a way.
There’s a logic to dreams that doesn’t necessarily follow linear narrative. You don’t know why things happen, it’s your subconscious pushing you, to give you information.
For me, I’m a filmmaker because, above all, I’m an explorer. I couldn’t help but to think back to my classmates at Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio. In school, when I got into upper-level math, there would be times when I would wake up from a dream and have – not an answer, exactly, but a direction to pursue. My writing has always been like that. I wake up from dreams knowing which direction to go in.

It was no accident that I made ‘Hoop Dreams’ because it concerned a sport that I loved and hoped would be my dream, however far-fetched that turned out to be. Because of the success of that film, Hollywood pigeonholed me as a sports biopic guy, which led to ‘Prefontaine’ and two cable sports films.
